Uniting over 779 WRUAs across the six Basin Areas in Kenya, KeNAWRUA strengthens local leadership in managing rivers, wetlands, and catchments—one community at a time.
Uniting to protect water resources, adapt to climate change, and build a sustainable future — because lasting impact is only possible when we work together
Our citizen-science monitoring initiatives and partnerships ensure water quality data drives informed policy—bridging grassroots knowledge with sustainable governance.
KeNAWRUA (Kenya National Association of Water Resources Users’ Associations) is a national umbrella body representing over 756 WRUAs across the six Basin Areas of Kenya. These are: Athi Basin Area, Rift Valley Basin Area, Tana Basin Area, Ewaso Nyiro North Basin Area, Lake Victoria North Basin Area, and Lake Victoria South Basin Area.
We are a registered civil society organization working to empower local communities to lead in the protection and sustainable management of Kenya’s rivers, wetlands, and catchments. Through training, advocacy, innovation, and partnerships, we strengthen grassroots leadership in water governance—one community at a time. A total of 2,367 community leaders have been trained, including 1,435 youth (both male and female), 700 women, 132 persons with disabilities (PWDs), 55 indigenous people, and 100 elderly participants.

With climate change worsening and Kenya’s population growing, our water systems are under threat. Rivers are drying, wetlands are shrinking, and competition for water is rising. The solution must be local, inclusive, and bold.
That’s what KeNAWRUA represents: a future where communities lead, where nature heals, and where every drop of water is valued and protected. By supporting WRUAs, you’re supporting:
Clean water access for remote villages
Ecosystem restoration across Kenya’s watersheds
Climate resilience in the face of floods and drought
Inclusive governance that gives voice to communities
