The Kenya National Association of Water Resources Users’ Associations (KeNAWRUA) is a national umbrella civil society organization uniting over 779 Water Resources Users’ Associations (WRUAs) across Kenya. We operate within the six major Basin Areas of Kenya, namely: Athi Basin Area, Rift Valley Basin Area, Tana Basin Area, Ewaso Nyiro North Basin Area, Lake Victoria North Basin Area, and Lake Victoria South Basin Area. A total of 2,367 community leaders have been trained, including 1,435 youth (both male and female), 700 women, 132 persons with disabilities (PWDs), 55 indigenous people, and 100 elderly participants.
KeNAWRUA is registered under the Societies Act (1978), Certificate No. 5712, and was established under the Water Resources Regulation 2025 to coordinate, support, and advocate for community-led water resources management across these diverse basin ecosystems.
KeNAWRUA exists to empower local communities in the management, equitable use, and protection of Kenya’s vital water resources. In an era of increasing water scarcity, climate change, and environmental stress, our work ensures that communities are at the heart of sustainable water governance — not just as users, but as stewards and decision-makers.
We connect grassroots efforts with national dialogue through capacity building, advocacy, knowledge sharing, and partnerships. By equipping WRUAs and amplifying their voices, we drive policy influence and promote lasting change in the way Kenya’s water is governed and preserved.
